How To Buy Online Advertising

Online advertising is a form of advertisement that employs the power of Internet and World Wide Web to get customers. It is rather a collective term for different forms of ads done online. Some of its popular forms are search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), email marketing and banner ads.

Online advertising is getting more and more popular over the traditional advertising because of its advantages. Its biggest benefit is that information is made available to the viewing public in a very short amount of time and in a wide geographical area depending on the advertiser’s needs.

One more benefit that is greatly appreciated by the marketing industry and the companies performing the advertisement is that the return on investment (ROI) can be well measured.

There are several means on how online advertising is being purchased;

1. Cost Per Mille (CPM) This is also known as “Cost Per Thousand (CPT)”. This model pertains to advertising bought on the basis of impression. For example if a website sells banner for $5/CPM implies it cost $5 to expose the banner to 1000 views.

2. Cost Per Click (CPC) This term is used interchangeably with pay-per-click (PPC). In this model of advertising, advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. Take Google AdWords as an example. You have to select your keywords and place a budget. When somebody searches on Google and matches your keyword then your advertisement will be exposed usually on the upper part of the search results page or on the right hand side depending on the budget you have set. When your advertisement is clicked then Google will bill you for that clicked.

3. Cost Per Action (CPA) This is an online advertising model where advertisers pay for each successful conversion only. That is for example, I am running advertisements for spa, the goal I have set for my clients is that they will pay only for every successful appointment made to their spa.

For advertisers, this is the best way to engage online advertising as the return on investment is easily checked.

How to Buy Products and Services Online

Step 1

Shop retailers with a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service. Bookmark them for easy access. Pay attention to the experiences of friends and colleagues, and avoid shady or unscrupulous merchants.

Step 2

Find out what fellow surfers think of a site. Epinions.com has customer ratings of online stores, which are helpful when deciding whether to do business with a particular site. Shop at Web sites that are quick to load and easy to navigate through so you can find what you want quickly. Look for secure and simple ordering procedures.

Step 3

Use price comparison tools, such as DealTime.com and Bizrate.com, to compare brands, prices and product features across several sites. Consider buying an online subscription to ConsumerReports.org to get critical information on large and small purchases.

Step 4

Read customer and media reviews to find out more about a product or service. Amazon.com lists editorial and customer reviews. Cnet.com and TechTV.com are good sources for technology reviews. Look for comments from consumers in a demographic similar to your own.

Step 5

Read the "About Us" section if you're buying from an unfamiliar Web site to find out how long the company has been in business and whether it has third-party recommendations. Check for a toll-free customer-service number.

Step 6

Look for enhanced shopping guides and options. For example, apparel merchant Lands' End allows you to shop by size, color, product and preference, and even has virtual mannequins that you can use to "try on" outfits (see How to Buy Clothes Online). Other merchants allow you to listen to partial tracks from CDs or read book excerpts before you buy.

Step 7

If you're shopping for a service, such as a plumber, look for clearly posted cancellation policies and free, instant quotes. Sites like Respond.com and Improvenet.com recommend prescreened service providers or contractors by region.

Step 8

If you're buying a product, review the shipping and handling costs, the return policy and whether the company pays shipping on returned items (see How to Make Returns).

Step 9

Charge your purchases on a credit or debit card. See How to Be a Savvy Consumer.

Step 10

Save a copy of the receipt and confirmation number on your hard drive, or print it out and keep a record of the transaction.

Step 11

Open an electronic wallet. Available at Yahoo! Shopping and elsewhere, this application allows you to store your credit card information in one place to avoid retyping it every time you make a purchase. American Express ID Keeper (www.americanexpress.com/idkeeper) is a Windows-based application that lets users securely store personal data, credit card information, and Web site log-ins and passwords. Additionally, this data is stored directly on the

How many people shop online

There is no way to know exactly how many people shop online. According to research, online shoppers number in the millions and are continuing to increase.

At some point in their life almost everyone shops online at least once. If you have a credit card or paypal account and access to the internet chances are you will buy at least one thing in your lifetime online. History of Online Shopping

Over the last ten years the history of online shopping has been shaped. While online shopping is commonplace now, it hasn’t been around forever. The World Wide Web became popular around 1989 and 1990 and has since seen an e-commerce explosion.

Online Banking
The second important step in the history of online shopping, beyond the invention of the Internet itself, was online banking. It was created and developing in 1994, making online transactions possible.

The Unlikely Frontrunner
Though surprising, Pizza Hut was the first online retailer. They were the first pizza chain to offer online ordering or home delivery during a 1994 test phase in Santa Cruz, California. All locations got the option in 2007.

Amazon’s Entrance
In 1995, Amazon launched as an online bookstore. Once the company realized other goods were also at high demand, they expanded to offer a bigger selection of merchandise.

The First eBay Auction
The online auction site, eBay, also began in 1995 and quickly grew in popularity. To this day, Amazon and eBay are the biggest online retailers.

The Explosion
Today, most brick-and-mortar stores have an online counterpart. With faster connections and better technology, the online shopping sector has been able to grow and gain popularity. Many people favor shopping online over going to the store for convenience and price comparison opportunities.

How to Shop Online - Reasons to Shop Online

According to a recent survey by Nielsen Online, a service of the Nielsen Company, most people who shop online during the holidays do it not to save money, but to save time. Their online survey of 1000 people
found that 81 percent shop online because they can shop any time of the day. Seventy-seven said they like to save time. Sixty-one percent said they like to comparison shop, and 56 percent said they like it because they can find things easily.

Interestingly, just 46 percent listed low prices as a reason to shop online, and 24 percent cited low shipping costs.

Similarly, an "eStudy" conducted by BizRate Research, a Shopzilla company, for Shop.org, found that convenience rules. Shop.org is part of the National Retail Federation.

Their "eStudy" included 2,695 people and found that the top reason to shop online was that people like to shop at any time of the day. More than 58 percent of the people chose that reason. Nearly 44 percent said they shop online so they won't have to fight crowds in stores. Nearly 39 percent said they like the general convenience of shopping on the Internet. About 36 percent of the shoppers also said they like the ability to compare prices online.

Unlike the Nielsen survey, the study done for Shop.org found that free shipping is a big draw. About 61 percent of the shoppers said that free shipping without conditions is one of the promotions they would most like to see.

"Free shipping offers drive online sales more than any other promotion, which is why they remain popular," said Scott Silverman, Executive Director of Shop.org.

Their survey also included 116 retailers and found that more than three-quarters of the businesses plan to offer free shipping with conditions. (With conditions means you have to buy a certain item or a certain amount before you get the free shipping.) Some retailers also plan on using shipping upgrades or discounted shipping.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Shopping Online

All sorts of people shop online for all kinds of reasons.

First, there is the convenience of being able to shop 24 hours a day for any type of product imaginable. The ability to shop from home allows many people who have trouble getting to real world shops such as elderly or disabled people or others with transport or mobility issues to still purchase the products and services they need. Many people also have trouble attending shops during their opening hours, such as those that work the same hours as shop opening times, mothers with young children and no one to mind them.

There are several advantages to shopping online, the first one being the ability to shop at a time that is convenient to you, not just when the shops are open. The second advantage of shopping online is that goods are often cheaper as the seller does not have the costs of running a shop and having to pay wages to salespeople, insurance and all of the other running costs of a real world business. Online shopping can also be a lot more comfortable than real world shopping, you do not have to deal with the weather - you won't get rained on for instance shopping online.

A huge advantage of shopping online is that you have the opportunity to compare as many products and prices as you want without having to spend the time and money to travel between several different shops. You will also be able to read reviews that have been written by other people who have purchased the item you are considering; you will be able to find out about the item from a genuine user not just the salesperson. Finally you will be able to find and buy products all over the world not just in your local area - this makes purchasing hard to find items a lot easier.

The main disadvantage of shopping online is that you have to pay shipping costs and have to wait for the items you purchased to be shipped and delivered. (This could take several weeks if you have purchased a product from overseas, and the costs of shipping may outweigh any savings you made on the purchase price.) You will not be able to purchase an item you need to use immediately online.

Another disadvantage is that you have to buy the item relying purely on a photograph and description, you cannot feel or see the item you want to buy. It can sometimes be quite hard to judge the size or quality of some items purely from a photograph. The final disadvantage of shopping online is that it is much harder and takes longer to return faulty goods; you will have to repack it and pay to ship it back to the seller. It can literally take weeks to exchange a faulty product purchased online.

In summary, the main advantages of shopping online are convenience and cost savings, while the main disadvantage is that the item is not immediately available, and you cannot inspect it personally before you make your purchase.

Tips for Shopping Online

Shopping Tip List
Here’s a list of tips you should consult when shopping online. Print this page and keep it in a handy place so it will be easy to review before you order.

* Trust your instincts. If you don’t feel comfortable buying or bidding on an item over the web, or if you feel pressured to place your order immediately, maybe you shouldn’t.

* Be knowledgeable about web-based auctions. Take special care to familiarize yourself not only with the rules and policies of the auction site itself but with the legal terms (warranties, refund policy, etc.) of the seller’s items that you wish to bid on.

* Double check pricing. Whether the product is being sold as new or used, be suspicious of prices that are too good to be true. Also consider carefully whether you may be paying too much for an item, particularly if you’re bidding through an auction site. You may want to comparison shop, online or offline, before you buy.

* Find and read the privacy policy. Read the privacy policy carefully to find out what information the seller is gathering from you, how the information will be used, and how you can stop the process. If a site does not have a privacy policy posted, you may not want to do business with that site. If it does have a privacy policy, there will probably be a link to it from the seller’s home page, or it could be included with the Legal Terms.

* Review the return, refund, and shipping and handling policies as well as the other legal terms. If you can’t find them, ask the seller through an e-mail or telephone call to indicate where they are on the site or to provide them to you in writing. See Legal Terms.

* Check that the Internet connections are secure. Before you give your payment information, there are various icons and software programs that indicate that security software is in place. See Security.

* Use the safest way to pay on the Internet. Pay for your order using a credit card. See Payment.

* Print the terms. You should print out and date a copy of terms, conditions, warranties, item description, company information, even confirming e-mails, and save them with your records of your purchase. See Recordkeeping.

* Insure the safe delivery of your item. If you’re concerned about the safety of your package if there’s no one home to receive it, ask whether you can specify that the shipper must receive a signature before leaving the package. Or, it may be safer to have the package delivered to your office. See Delivery.

* Inspect your purchase. Look at your purchase carefully as soon as you receive it. Contact the seller as soon as possible if you discover a problem with it. Tell the seller in writing about any problem that you are concerned with, ask for a repair or refund, and keep a copy of your correspondence. See Legal Terms.
